BIOGRAPHY & INTERESTS

I grew up in Oxfordshire, and spent many very happy years at Cranford House School, where I was Head Girl in my final year. I undertook my A Levels at The Henley College, where I was taught Classical Civilisations by a wonderful Oxford University alumnus who became my mentor in the run-up to my own Oxford application. It was her advice and encouragement that led to my successful application to Trinity College, and to my eventual decision to become a tutor myself! Post-Oxford, after a couple of years working in the music industry, I made the decision to leave my position and to start up an online culture magazine. Now in its second year, The Tung is a popular site for reviews, interviews and opinions pieces focused on art, music, and theatre, which gives a voice to emerging artists. As well as allowing me to develop a few business skills along the way, the magazine also gives me an excuse to write and edit, and to see lots of theatre in between sneaking into a few private views. 

EXPERIENCE & APPROACH

Since leaving university I’ve specialised in English and Latin, teaching all ages between 11 and 16. My approach to each lesson, no matter the age of the student, has stemmed from my experience with my own wonderful tutor. Through her I learned that, as important as it is to lay strong academic foundations, it’s just as vital to make every lesson fun and engaging. I always do my best to work collaboratively to build tools which each child can apply not just in exams but throughout their education and beyond. Having said that, I do always get a buzz the first time a student is able to recount a Latin paradigm, or identifies a particularly good literary device! I particularly love to teach English poetry, and to talk through the canon of Latin literature with my students. I find the latter can really help with the age old ‘but what’s the point of learning a dead language?’ question.
