African Science Academy

 

In November 2023, Oppidan ran a peer mentoring programme at the African Science Academy in Tema, Ghana.  

One of the leading educational institutions on the whole continent, the Academy is on a mission to find exceptional girls from across Africa and prepare them for A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics in just 10 months. 

In simple terms peer mentoring involves training older students to mentor their younger peers, developing the whole school community and pupil leadership skills. With surveying before and after the programme, Oppidan are principally tasked to measure pupil confidence, communication and sense of belonging. 

With ASA, Oppidan worked specifically with the progression mentors (students who have just left but haven’t begun university study) to help develop their skills in nurturing the current cohort. The progression mentors then took the students through the training themselves, ensuring longevity of impact when a few of the current students become progression mentors next year.
